University of Michigan President speaks to Economic Club of Marquette County

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) The Economic Club of Marquette County had a special guest speaker Monday evening: Mark Schlissel, the President of the University of Michigan. Schlissel, who holds an M.D. and Ph.D from Johns Hopkins University, and has also previously worked at UC Berkeley and Brown University, was in the U.P. to promote the University of Michigan as a college choice for U.P. high school students. He calls the university the top public research institution in the country, a center for athletics and the arts, and a driver of the Michigan economy.

"The university views its' mission as educating students from all around the state, but also in doing the research and providing innovation that helps drive the economy,” he said. “And the areas that we're good at - medicine, water resources, engineering, social research - are things that align well with Michigan's interests and its' needs.".

Schlissel also says the university’s large size makes for a diverse student body, which he says is important, because much of a college student’s education from their fellow students.
