ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - Over a ton in donations and reportedly thousands of dollars made it to the Salvation Army and St. Vincent DePaul food bank this weekend.

The United Steel Workers local 2-21 held their annual USW strike for hunger donation drive.

The workers stood in front of Elmer's in Escanaba, Supervalu in Gladstone and several satellite locations continuously from Friday at 5:00pm until 5:00 this afternoon.

"Today's a little slow because of the rain but yesterday was fantastic," USW local 2-21 member Albin Hansen said. "Donations have been good we've unloaded a truck load from here already yesterday and started on another one, cash donations and the truck loads are good."

The steel workers estimated thousands of people showed up over the course of the weekend in support of the charity drive.
