After 2016 damage, UP Fall Beer Fest may have backup site

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The proposed permit for this year's U.P. Fall Beer Festival in Marquette includes an alternate location in case Mattson Lower Harbor Park is not suitable due to weather.

Lakeview Arena would be the alternate site, and the decision to move the beer fest there would be made on Thursday, Sept. 7. The festival is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 9.

The Lower Harbor grass was heavily damaged last year by large vehicles hauling kegs to the event and a torrential downpour during the event.

The Marquette City Commission is scheduled to vote on the proposed permit at a regular meeting this Monday. City staff worked with the city attorney and the Michigan Brewers Guild, Inc. to develop the permit. The commission agenda says the city's community services, public works and police departments are all working together to monitor the event to ensure no park damage occurs.

This will be the ninth year for the beer fest. It brings about 5,000 people to the Lower Harbor every year.
