Two generic forms of Viagra now out on the market

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The 'little blue pill' has gone generic. There are now two generic versions of Viagra out on the market.

Viagra was first introduced in 1998 as the first drug to combat erectile dysfunction. The brand name variation can cost up to $75, but pharmacists expect the generics be $45 to $50 or lower.

Teva Pharmaceuticals makes one variety of the new generic Viagra. The other is being made by a subsidiary of Pfizer, the company that owns produces Viagra.

For most drugs there are cheaper alternatives.

“If you find yourself being prescribed a brand name medication that is very expensive and does not have a generic available, I strongly encourage you to talk to your pharmacy and ask them if there is either an alternative medication that is available generically or another drug that could be used that would be effective,” said Pharmacist Alicia Thatcher of Campus Pharmacy.

Doctors recommend seeing a physician first for impotence as it may be a sign of heart disease.
