MARQUETTE - Mich. (WLUC) - For many in the Catholic community, celebrating and learning about the meaning of Lent starts young. Such was the case for students at Father Marquette Catholic Academy today, when grades kindergarten through four walked over to St. Peter Cathedral to receive their ashes.
Laura Wayand's fourth grade class has been focusing on prayerfulness this month. Wayand says understanding the power of prayer is helping students better understand why they sacrifice things during Lent.
"For example, playing video games, maybe cutting down that time and choosing to be more prayerful during that time, but also doing more of something as well," Wayand said. "So maybe spending more time with their family, spending more time with their friends, spending more time with Jesus as well."
The school's Little Eagles program and pre-k stayed behind, but had a priest visit them during the daytime to receive their ashes.
