Snowy conditions a factor in fatal two-vehicle crash

BATES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - Troopers from the Michigan State Police Iron Mountain Post responded to a personal vehicle crash involving a passenger car and a semi-tractor trailer. The accident occurred at approximately 1 p.m. on Wednesday, on Bates Amasa Road, near Paulson Road in Bates Township.

The preliminary investigation determined that the operator of the passenger vehicle carrying three brothers, failed to negotiate a curve, lost control of the vehicle, crossed over the center line and collided with the semi-tractor trailer operated by a 58-year-old man from Iron River.

The driver of the car, a 16-year-old man from Houghton, was transported to Aspirus Hospital and later airlifted to a Wisconsin hospital, He is listed in critical condition.

The front passenger, a 22-year-old man from Houghton, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The rear passenger, a 20-year-old man from Houghton, was transported by ambulance to Aspirus Hospital where he was admitted and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

All people involved were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision. The driver of the semi was not injured.

Icy, snow-covered roads are believed to be a factor in the crash.

The investigation by the MSP is ongoing. Assisting at the scene was the Iron County Sheriff's Department, West Iron County Fire Department, Aspirus EMS and the Iron County Search and Rescue Unit.
