MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - As October approaches, so does the big Kraft Hockeyville NHL game taking place at Lakeview Arena in Marquette. On Saturday, a big decision regarding that game was made... Choosing who will sing the national anthem on live TV for the game. Dozens packed the Ore Dock Brewing Company in Marquette to audition and watch those singing.
"It's a great event! It's like American Idol for the national anthem contest for the Kraft Hockeyville game," Doug Garrow, the Local Organizing Committee Chairman for Kraft Hockeyville USA, and one of the judges for the contest.
Singers auditioning ranged in ages and backgrounds, and the competition was open to anyone brave enough to perform. Around 40 people ended up auditioning for their chance to sing on the ice.
"We just wanted to open up this opportunity up to anyone in our community," said Garrow. "If you have a voice, or think you have a voice, you could've come down to auditions, gave it a chance, and sang the song."
Singers performed in front of a panel of five judges, who scored them on the performance, their voice, and their understanding of the song on a scale of 1 to 10. After everyone auditioned, the judges deliberated for about fifteen minutes before announcing the winners.
Chosen to sing the national anthem on October 4th during the NHL preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres and the Carolina Hurricanes, were twin sisters Karen and Megan Ludwig. Karen and Megan are 15-year-olds who attend Marquette Senior High School, and are so talented they even created the arrangement they performed.
When interviewed, the girls were overcome with emotion with the opportunity to sing at the game.
"It's incredible, we can't even comprehend how excited we are," said Karen. "It's going to be amazing."
"I'm so excited and still in shock," said Megan. "We are very excited to be able to represent Marquette."
The first and second runners up will also get the chance to sing the national anthem during activities revolving around Kraft Hockeyville USA. Olivia Miller, who came in second, will perform at the Hockeyville 5K on October 1st, and Brian Matthews, who came in third, will sing at the Hockeyville Cook Out at the Marquette Commons on October 3rd.
