MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The 27th Anniversary of the UP200 sled dog race begins Friday evening in downtown Marquette.
Opening ceremony takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Washington Street with the races following at 7 p.m in front of the Mining Journal. Before the races, snow is brought in and placed on the street to ensure a safe path for the mushers and teams. Vet checks begin at 10 a.m. at the Riverside Auto parking lot.
Families are invited to the Children’s Museum between 5 and 7 p.m. for a pizza party and pictures with the UP200 mascot! Many Downtown businesses are serving refreshments and a warm place to sit during the races. The Ore Dock Brewing Company and Masonic building are hosting warm-up parties during and after the races with music and drinks. Several viewing spots along the trail are available to stop and cheer on the teams as they travel from Marquette to Grand Marais. Click here for viewing locations.
Between 8:30 and 11 a.m. on Saturday, teams from the Midnight Run finish at the Lower Harbor. The Jack Pine 30 race begins at 10 a.m. from Larry’s Family Foods in Gwinn.
The UP 200 will wrap up on Sunday at Lakenenland, instead of Marquette's Lower Harbor due to weather and trail conditions.
