REPUBLIC, Mich. (WLUC) - The Michigamme River Basin Authority has officially purchased the Republic Dam for $50,000 from the Republic Mountain Lake LLC.
It's been a work in progress for quite some time according to authority board member Jim Brennan.
The purchase insures that the 28th annual Republic Fishing Derby will go on as planned on July 21 and 22nd.
As of Monday this week the gates of the dam were also removed and replaced. The new renovations cost a total of $49,000.
The authority has started impounding the basin and hopes to have the water level up to 1,492 feet sometime in the next two weeks. Permits require that the water be impounded no more than 6 inches per 24-hour period.
According to Brennan the next phase to repair the dam is to create a permanent spillway. It is unknown how much a spillway would cost and it would need to be approved by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
