MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Words of expression fill the sidewalks of Marquette Sunday to kick off the start of Art Week, from June 24-30.
It's Poetry on Third, where poets of all ages write an original poem in chalk on the sidewalks of Third Street. Each age group, from Kindergarten through adults, took places along the store fronts between the 500 and 600 blocks.
"One of the great things about poetry is poetry is our first language. It's what we learn in nursery rhymes, and so with Poetry on Third we want to remind people that poetry isn't something they need to be afraid of. It's something they can have fun with and love, so we're bringing poetry out on the streets and getting people to fall in love with it again," explains Janeen Rastall, a member of the Marquette Poets Circle.
Judges choose winners based on creativity, keeping with this year's theme of "All Things Big," and a fun factor. Winners of each age group receive a prize pack full of gift cards awarded at the Sunday night concert at Marquette Commons. The winning poems will also be published in the August issue of Marquette Monthly.
