MUNISING, Mich. (WLUC) -- The end of the workweek is always a good reason to eat pizza. But on May 19 in Munising, people were eating pizza for a good cause.

Pictured Rocks Pizza was helping the Alger County Community Collaborative raise funds for suicide prevention. For the first-ever Pizza with a Purpose event, the pizzeria sold $10 tickets, each good for one 11-inch pizza with two toppings. For each ticket, the collaborative receives $7.

Organizers said prevention is especially important in the Upper Peninsula, where suicide rates are higher than the state average, according to data from the Michigan Department of Community Health.

"This is a good time to really start getting the word out," said May Jo O'Halloran-Torongo, executive director of Alger County Community Collaborative . "We need to really talk about depression. We need to talk about the stigma around getting help. We need to reach out to folks and say, 'We can do something.'"

Organizers said they raised at least several thousand dollars, and they planned to make Pizza with a Purpose an annual event.

The fundraiser continues all day on Saturday, May 20.
