One week until Hockeyville USA

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - We're just eight days away from one of the biggest hockey games in Marquette history. The Kraft Hockeyville USA game will bring not only the NHL and NBC to Marquette, but also several community members out to celebrate.

"Come to think that about a week from now, we're going to have an NHL game in here,” said Andrew MacIver, Parks and Recreation Coordinator with the City of Marquette. ”That's big time stuff, we haven't had that happen here for a very long time. It's a great thing for the community and also the people that use this building."

Tickets have been drawn for the Kraft Hockeyville USA practice and game on October 4th between the Carolina Hurricanes and Buffalo Sabres. They will announce the winners on Wednesday in the Mining Journal and on the Lakeview Facebook page.

"It's definitely exciting to see who's going to get tickets,” explained Doug Garrow, Local Chairman of the Kraft Hockeyville committee. “You look through the list and there's names you recognize and names from out of town you don't recognize, so it's people from all over the U.P. really. We've had names from Rapid River, Manistique, Sault Saint Marie, I mean people came from all over the U.P. to apply and some of them got tickets so it's exciting."

Even if you don't get tickets there are several ways you can enjoy the Hockeyville title in Marquette. Events to celebrate the big win begin Saturday October 1st and range from a 5k, to a fun fair with the Stanley Cup, and a parade down Third Street.

"Everything is going to lead up to the game and every day, I think, is going to be fun, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday," said Garrow.

City staff and community volunteers have been working tirelessly to get Lakeview Arena up to NHL standards. Their hard work culminates this week as NBC and NHL officials arrive for the game.

"The building is going to go on lockdown Friday,” explained Andrew MacIver. “We're not going to let anyone in here because we've got the NHL and NBC. They are going to be combing through the building getting ready to set up for their event because of course there are all kinds of standards we need to meet. It's going to be a surprise for everyone when they walk in here especially if they haven't been in here in the last couple of weeks."
