ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - It has been several years since K-9 Officer Benny retired from the Delta County Sheriff’s Office, but with the reinstatement of the K-9 program, there is a new dog in town and his name is Jet.

Jet is a 15-month-old Dutch Shepherd from the Netherlands. He is currently in Marquette undergoing further training, before heading to a training facility near downstate Alpena with his handler, Deputy Jamie McDonough.

Like all K-9 officers, Jet will have areas of specialization.

“For narcotics detection, tracking, handler protection and suspect apprehension,” Deputy McDonough said. “[Like if] we have a lost hunter or anything like that with deer season coming up. We're hoping to be on the streets working by deer season.”

The K-9 program is being funded through generous community donations as well as money seized from illegal drug operations.
