New book sheds light on former Marquette orphanage

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - A local photographer has a new book about old building in Marquette. It's a look inside the former Holy Family Orphanage.

Chuck LaBelle has been taking professional photos nearly his whole life. Recently he turned his lens to the old orphanage for his book titled "The Holy Family Orphans Home-Abandoned." The book features amazing natural low light photos from inside the dilapidated building, before restoration work began.

"I hope they can see the beauty of the building, a lot of people talk about the decay and the darkness, the eeriness of the building but the building held a lot of beauty and I hope the photographs represent that," LaBelle said.

He's also working on a companion book that captures the renovations and workers.

LaBelle's photos will also be on display in a gallery inside the Peter White Public Library in September. The book is available at the Marquette Regional History Center, local bookstores and online.
