CHAMPION, Mich. (WLUC) - Van Riper State Park is preparing something special Sunday August 12. It's called Meteors and S'mores. Van Riper is offering a chance to grab a sweet treat and watch the Persied Meteor Shower.

The Van Riper's Explorer Guide will explain some of the night sky and the meteor showers, then you can walk down the beach area for self-guided viewing. 20 state parks throughout the state are participating in the event.

"It's really important to support your state parks, I think it's something that people should realize, and up here we don't have that many state parks throughout the Upper Peninsula" said Myah Tatay the park's Explorer Guide. "It's celebrating with your family and having a s'more and watching the meteor shower is really fun to do and it's just a great day to come out and do something on a Sunday night."

The event begins at 9:30 Sunday night. It is free, however you must have the state Recreation Passport on your vehicle.
