MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) -- August is Maritime Month, and the Marquette Maritime Museum celebrated with a Children's Day Aug. 12.
The museum had a variety of activities for kids, including painting a mural of a shipwreck and making a toilet paper roll doll of Anastasia "Eliza" Truckey, a 19th century lighthouse keeper.
Musuem staff said the event helped kids connect to the Upper Peninsula's maritime history.
"If you can show kids that history is fun, they can just keep learning for the rest of their lives," said Museum Manager Hilary Billman.
The museum has other Maritime Month events through the rest of August, including several evening lighthouse tours and a Seniors' Day scheduled for Tues., Aug. 15 that will include refreshments and a scavenger hunt with prizes.
