'Lighten Up' tour offers reading, dogs to show importance of literacy

NIAGARA, Wis. (WLUC) - March is National Reading Month, and a local author, along with his two dogs, are teaching children the importance of literacy.

John Estes recently wrote a book called "Lighten Up." It focuses on values that are easy for children to understand. He'll take his dogs and his story to local libraries, schools, and hospitals. In addition to his reading his book, he plans to play music to lighten up spirits.

Estes said his book was inspired be the impact dogs have on humans.

"What is it that makes dogs different from people and what can we learn from dogs as human and what can we easily apply if we put our minds to it," Estes said.

Estes will begin his "Lighten Up" reading tour on March 17th at the Dickinson County Library at 10 a.m. Those who attend will hear the reading and can play with both dogs, Pepper and Retta.
