LANSING, Mich. (WLUC) - State Rep. John Kivela (D-Marquette) took the oath of office Wednesday for his third term representing the Upper Peninsula communities of House District 109 during the official opening of the 99th session of the Michigan House of Representatives in Lansing. Kivela is serving his third and final term due term limits.

"I am honored to be able to again represent the residents of House District 109, and I pledge to continue advocating for our children, families, senior citizens, businesses and communities in the Upper Peninsula,” said Kivela.

“I look forward to working hard with my Democratic and Republican colleagues to make Michigan work better for all of us," Kivela said. "I will continue fighting for common-sense legislation dealing with the dark store issue that creates problems for our local governments, an energy plan that makes sense for the U.P. and other issues that will help us keep the U.P. a good place to live, work and raise a family.”

Kivela represents the 109th House District, which comprises Alger, Luce and Schoolcraft counties and most of Marquette County.

“I can do my best for HD 109 residents when I know what they are thinking, so my door is always open, and my staff and I are always ready to listen to ideas, as well as help residents navigate their way through state departments,” said Kivela. “I encourage HD 109 residents to call, email or contact me through my website with their questions and suggestions.”

Kivela and his staff can be reached by toll-free phone at (888) 429-1377, by email at or through his website at
