CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) After a three year hiatus, “Free the Music Fest” kicked off at Lakenenland in Chocolay Township Friday evening. 17 different local bands from a variety of musical genres are performing at the festival today and tomorrow. There’s a food vendor, but attendees have to bring their own drinks. The festival is free and open to the public.

“We ran it from 2011 to 2014, and then I moved my family out to Minnesota for work, and the work kind of dried up out there, so I moved my family back,” said festival organizer Cody Lakenen. “So many people asked me, ‘are you doing this festival now that you’re back in town, are you going to keep doing it?’ Finally enough people asked me, and I was like ‘alright, I’m doing it again’.”

The festival goes for two days, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, and noon until 11 p.m. on Saturday. For more information on the event, visit the “related links” section in this article.
