Former NMU hockey player dies

ROCHESTER, MN. (WLUC) - A former Northern Michigan University backup goalie for the NMU Wildcats hockey team died on Saturday.

25-year-old Michael Doan, a Sault Ste. Marie native died in a single-vehicle accident in Rochester, Minnesota.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, around 8:30 a.m. Doan was driving a 2013 Nissan Altima on Highway 14 when his car went into a ditch and struck a utility pole.

The car flipped over and landed on its top.

Doan played as a goalie for the Wildcats from 2013 to 2015. Prior to his Wildcat career, he played at St. Mary’s College and the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

This past season, Doan played in the Southern Professional Hockey League.
