ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - Another major retailer in Escanaba is closing.
The Kmart store on North Lincoln Road is set to close in early October, according to a blog post by CEO Eddie Lampert. Associates at 35 Kmart and eight Sears stores were informed of the closures on Friday.
"This is part of a strategy both to address losses from unprofitable stores and to reduce the square footage of other stores because many of them are simply too big for our current needs," Lampert wrote.
Liquidation sales will begin as early as July 13 at all closing stores, parent company Sears Holdings says. The Kmart in Monroe is the only other Michigan store on Friday's list.
After the Escanaba store closes, the only Kmart store remaining in Upper Michigan will be in Menominee.
Escanaba has seen some major retail changes already this year. Meijer opened in May. Super One Foods closed in April, and JCPenney is in the process of closing.
