NEWBERRY, Mich. (WLUC) - Law enforcement agencies participated in a snowmobile safety task force this weekend. The focus of the task force was enforcing laws for careless operation, unreasonable speed, operating while intoxicated, exceeding exhaust sound decibel levels, and reducing accidents.

The Alger County Sheriff, Chippewa County Sheriff, Luce County Sheriff, Mackinac County Sheriff, Schoolcraft County Sheriff, Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan State Police all took part in the task force.

The agencies gathered a number of results from participation this weekend:
- 88 verbal warnings issued
- 34 citations issued
- 2,455 contacts with snowmobilers, mostly trail counts as riders passed officers
- Zero arrests
- Five accidents
- One lost snowmobiler

Agencies would like to remind snowmobilers to operate in a safe manner by riding on the correct side of the trail at all times, especially when going around corners, stopping at all stop signs, and reducing speed at corners. If you are a rider, make sure you have the proper registration and trail permit in the proper locations.
