MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The 20 year old man who first vandalized the statue of Phil Niemisto in downtown Marquette was sentenced Thursday. Alex Wiitanen was not in court, but was represented by his attorney.

Wiitanen was given a delay of sentence. He's currently working off community service hours in North Carolina. Wiitanen also has to pay court costs to Marquette County.

Wiitanen damaged the hat and scarf of the statue in January. Unfortunately that would not be the last time the statue suffered damage. Earlier in July the statue was damaged for a second time. Marquette city police have released surveillance footage of that incident.
