2018 Medicare Plan enrollment deadline ends Thursday

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The deadline to enroll in a 2018 Medicare plan is Thursday at midnight.
Changes have been made to this year’s plan.

According to the Chief Operating Office of Upper Peninsula Health Plan, Melissa Holmquist, consumers will be able to adjust their plan to fit the changes.

“It's really a great opportunity for people with Medicare to find out what plans are offered in their area, maybe make a change in their coverage and really find the best fit for them,” Holmquist said.

People are encouraged to take a deeper look at their plans and other plans. Each plan comes with a different cost and coverage.

“You are going to want to look at cost. Different plans have different premium amounts, cost sharing requirements like a copay or coinsurance,” Holmquist said. “They also have different coverage some plans only cover medical services, some only prescription drugs and other covers both.”

Michigan also has the MMAP Organization available for coverage consulting. Experts say calling the plans themselves is another great option.

“I really encourage you to call their customer service department they can walk you through the benefits, check if your doctors are in network. You can also call Medicare,” Holmquist said.

The centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services estimate the Medicare advantage average monthly premium will decrease by $1.91 and for individuals wanting to adjust their plan, the process is easy.

“If you are looking at changing from a current plan to a new one all you have to do is submit an application for the new plan and you will be automatically dis-enrolled from your other plan, and its effective the 1st of next year,” Holmquist said.

The Medicare plan is effective the first of next year and from January to February, an individual can di-enroll if it does not fit their needs.
