MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Marquette police have made an arrest in the vandalism to the Phil Niemisto statue, and the hat and scarf have been recovered.

According to a press release, Marquette police arrested 20-year-old Alex David Wiitanen of Marquette Thursday morning.

On Saturday morning, people noticed the statue of the Downtown Marquette icon had been damaged overnight, and the hat and scarf of the statue were stolen. The statue was built in October and placed in the pocket park named after Niemisto.

Warrants were authorized by the Marquette County Prosecutor's Office for malicious destruction of tombs and memorials less than $200 and for larceny less than $200. Wiitanen was released upon posting $500 bond.

Police say they have recovered the hat and scarf that were stolen from the statue.

According to the Marquette Downtown Development Authority, investigators were given multiple camera angles from area businesses with a view of the pocket park Friday night and Saturday morning.
