19th annual Ore to Shore to draw record numbers of riders

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Racers packed Lakeview Arena as registration for the 19th annual Ore to Shore Mountain bike Epic kicked off.

More than 2,000 riders are expected to take part in the race and organizers say 2018 could bring record numbers.

Races include a 48-mile ride from Negaunee to Marquette and a 28-mile and 1-mile ride.

2017's winner Brian Matter says the Ore to Shore comes at the heart of his training season and he is excited to hit the trails again on the morning of Saturday, August 11.

"You definitely have to be well prepared for it, it is pretty intense and some races are pretty technical, so lot of practice, lots of riding goes into it," said Matter. "Luckily Marquette has some amazing trails like south mountain so there's plenty of opportunity to get that practice in."

The 10-mile Shore Rock race kicks things off Saturday morning at 8 a.m. from Marquette's Lakeview Arena.
