Night Storytellers with Troy Graham and Emily Smith

Event Dates and Times

10/12/2017 - Starts: 7:00 PM - Ends: 8:30 PM
Peter White Public Library, Community Room, Marquette, MI
Enjoy a weeknight concert with Troy Graham and Emily Smith at the Peter White Public Library on Thursday, October 12, at 7:00 pm in the library’s community room.

Troy Graham, original singer-songwriter from Marquette, MI has made his living touring the country playing a mixture of folk, indie and bluegrass music since the age of 19. Most recently he is working on a solo album, after a decade long run with bands, Sparrow Tree (bluegrass) and Lake of Shadows (indie-folk). His songwriting abilities bring intriguing lyrics and poetics to the stage that make you stop and think. He captivates audiences with known classic melodies and new original modern folk tunes.

Although Emily Smith has just started accompanying Troy on vocals, their harmonizing abilities makes it appear like they've been a duo for years. Emily grew up in a musical family with classical music training from her mother and a theater background. She is all around artistic, also a painter, and gets into the creative process of music for the pure joy of the experience. She has the true ability to be a performer by radiating that joy unto the audience.

There is no admission charge to the attend the concert thanks to sponsorship by the Carroll Paul Memorial Trust Fund of the Peter White Public Library. For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.

Historical Monuments: removal and reassessment round-table

Event Dates and Times

10/12/2017 - Starts: 7:00 PM
NMU Mead Auditorium, Marquette MI
The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center is hosting a round-table discussion titled, “Historical Monuments: removal and reassessment,” on Thursday, October 12 at 7 p.m. The roundtable discussion will be held in the Mead Auditorium in the West Science Building on the campus of Northern Michigan University. Admission is free and open to the public.
Across the United States there are hundreds of monuments commemorating important events and individuals who helped define our communities, states and nation. Over the past several weeks, there has been much debate regarding the status of many of these monuments, some which honor individuals and causes that many in society find offensive. This roundtable discussion will place these monuments, and the recent events in Charlottesville and across the country, into historical context and provide a venue for public discourse on this challenging topic.
There will be two participants in the roundtable, both faculty members at Northern Michigan University. They include Dr. Rebecca Mead, Professor of History and Dr. Martin Reinhardt, Associate Professor of Native American Studies. Daniel Truckey, Director of the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center, will be the moderator.
