One Book One Community Panel Presentation

Event Dates and Times

9/27/2017 - Starts: 7:00 PM - Ends: 9:00 PM
Peter White Public Library, Community Room, Marquette, MI
One Book One Community invites the public to a panel on POW camps in the UP in conjunction with John Smolen’s novel Wolf’s Mouth on Wednesday, September 27 at 7:00 pm in the Peter White Public Library’s Community Room.

There will be three panelists: John Pepin, Larry Chabot, and Gary Asano. John Pepin worked at the Mining Journal for 21 years where he researched and produced special UP-centered historical publications. In January 2000, the Mining Journal published a series of five articles he wrote entitled “POW Camps in the UP,” which were expanded into the 2004 documentary film Enemy in our Midst, co-produced with Jackie Chandonnet. During his portion of the panel event, John will focus on UP POW camps, showing clips from this documentary.

Historian and author, Larry Chabot has written two UP history books: The UP Goes to War: Upper Michigan and Its Heroes in World War II (2006) and Saving Our Sons: How the Civilian Conservation Corps Rescued a Generation of Upper Michigan Men (2009.) Larry will present on the Civilian Conservation Corps Camps.

Orthodontist Gary Asano is a third generation Japanese descendant also known as “Sansei.” His grandparents immigrated into the United States prior to World War II and his parents were born and raised in California. The family was interned in concentration camps in Arizona and California during World War II, which will be the focus of Gary’s presentation.

The speakers will be available for a question & answer session after their presentation.

There is no admission charge to attend this event which is sponsored by the Peter White Public Library, Northern Michigan University, and Snowbound Books. For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.
