Project Keep Kids Warm
8th Annual outreach ministry to provide winter clothing to needy area youth.

Schedule:
Tuesday September 19, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Assemble bags and labels at Wesley.

Saturday September 23, 10:00 a.m. – Noon (Start at Wesley)
Distribute KKW bags/donation instructions throughout neighborhoods. Lunch follows.

Saturday September 30, 10:00 a.m. – Noon (Start at Wesley)
Collect winter clothing donations throughout the neighborhoods. Snacks follow.

Thursday October 5, 5:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Set up tables and organized winter clothing at the Ishpeming Armory.

Saturday, October 7, 9:00 a.m. – noon.
Help with free shopping day and take down following at the Ishpeming Armory.

October 8 through November 3, Shopping for clothing items not available at the Armory day.

Saturday, November 4, 9:00 a.m. – Noon (At Wesley)
Pick up day for winter clothing not available at the Armory day.

Retired McGill University Professor, Roger Magnuson will teach a six-week course entitled “Three Major Events of the Middle Ages: The Crusades, the Rise of Universities, and the Invention of the Printing Press” in the Peter White Public Library’s Lions Room beginning on Wednesday, September 20 at 6:30 pm.

Professor Magnuson holds a Ph.D. in History and Philosophy of Education from the University of Michigan. Now retired, he was a Professor of Education, McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, where he taught for more than thirty years. Professor Magnuson is the author of four books on Quebec educational history and has been teaching classes at Peter White Public Library since 2007 at no charge.

The class meets weekly on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:00 pm and runs through October 25. The class is open to the public at no charge and no registration is required.

Negaunee Feeding America Mobile Food Pantry

Negaunee
On September 20th, 2017, Feeding America West Michigan will distribute 15,000 pounds of food to people in need at Negaunee High School. The distribution will take place at 4:30 pm with registration beginning at 4:00 pm.
The Mobile Pantry will contain fresh produce, dairy products and baked goods with an emphasis on nutrition. Clients will not have to show identification or proof of income to receive food; however, they will be required to provide basic contact information and affirm that they are in need of food. They are encouraged to bring their own bags or boxes.
Mark Marana, Principal of Negaunee High School indicated, “We are enthused to host our 6th mobile Food Pantry with Feeding America on September 20th. It is a great opportunity for our students to give back to the community and it is a much needed program that we are proud to be involved with.”
Food insecurity affects 1 in 8 people in West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. In 2015, Feeding America West Michigan’s Mobile Pantry program provided 10.7 million pounds of food to people in the region. That’s the equivalent of nearly 9 million meals.

Sci-Fi on Tap: The Fifth Season

On Wednesday, September 20 at 7:00 pm, the Peter White Library will be hosting a meeting of its new book club, Sci-Fi on Tap, at the Ore Dock Brewing Company.

The focus of this meeting will be The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin, published in 2015. In the world that Jemisin creates, there is a single continent called the Stillness populated not only by ordinary mortals but also orogenes, beings who have the ability to feel and control the earth and weather. In addition to having the normal seasons of spring, summer, fall and winter, this world periodically undergoes a fifth season of catastrophe which the inhabitants must strive to survive. Winner of the 2016 Hugo Award for best novel, the Fifth Season is the first in The Broken Earth series.

The Doctor is in...Memory Care and the Role of Neuropsychology

Do you ever have trouble remembering where you put your keys? Or have you seen a familiar face but couldn’t come up with a name? On Wednesday, September 20 from noon till 1:00 pm, U.P.H.S. Marquette neuropsychologist Dr. Amanda Johnson will explain how the field of neuropsychology can help with memory care in this month’s Meet the Physician series in the Peter White Public Library’s Shiras Room.

A graduate of Wayne State University, Dr. Johnson did a fellowship in neuropsychology and rehabilitation psychology at Michigan State University, Flint Area Medical Education. Be sure to bring a sack lunch as well as any questions you may have for the doctor.

Library Treasure Sale & Silent Auction

Are you a fan of estate sales and auctions? Drop by the Peter White Public Library to take advantage of our Library Treasure Sale and Silent Auction taking place this September.

The Peter White Public Library has been cleaning closets, and we will be offering items for sale. These are items which have been collecting dust in our closets, under desks and hidden away in various other nooks and crannies. If you like a good treasure hunt, you’ll want to be sure you visit the library!

Treasure Sale
The Library Treasure Sale will take place in the Business Reference Room on the upper floor of the library. This sale will be held Thursday, September 7 from 10am – 5pm; Friday, September 8 from 10am – 6pm; and Saturday, September 9 from 10am – 1pm. Don’t let the dust bunnies fool you. There are many collectibles included in this sale: china sets, a 24-carat gold-plated kazoo, statues, vases, and more!

Silent Auction
Through the month of September, the Peter White Public Library will display art, furniture, and other objects which will be sold as part of a fundraising silent auction. Visit the Huron Mountain Club Gallery on the main floor of the library to view this exhibit. Items will be available for bid September 1st - September 29th.

The Marquette Regional History Center Special Exhibit space hosts:
Great Girls in Michigan History
September 20—October 18
This exhibit will be celebrating nine girls from across Michigan including a wrestler, an activist and a soldier who did great things before they turned twenty. Upper Peninsula girls Nancy Harkness Love, Copper Country aviator during World War II, and Jane Johnston Schoolcraft, Ojibwe creative writer and translator, are featured. This traveling exhibit was created by the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame. Sponsored by Zonta Club of Marquette.
