Multiculturalism in the UP

Event Dates and Times

1/15/2018 - Starts: 6:30 PM - Ends: 8:30 PM
Peter White Public Library, Community Room, Marquette, MI
On Monday, January 15, the Peter White Public Library will host a round table discussion with Linda Cobe, Timothy Derwin, Mohey Mowafy, and Kadijah Wilson on Multiculturalism in the UP at 6:30 pm in the library’s community room.

A graduate of Northern Michigan University, Linda is an Ojibwe/Oneida elder enrolled with the Lac Vieux Desert Tribe in Watersmeet, MI. She has recently published an autobiography entitled Red, White & Blues. Although Linda has faced a life of abandonment, boarding school, adoption, abuse, and loss of culture, she has come full circle as she has found her way back to self-discovery.

Timothy Derwin earned a BS in political science from Grand Valley State University. He has worked as a supports coordinator the Native American Family Services in Grand Rapids, MI, a behavioral counselor for his Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and currently as an Indian outreach worker for Marquette, Alger, and Schoolcraft Counties. Traditional cultural ways were taught to him at a young age, and he encourages his two daughters to be involved in as many cultural activities and practices as possible.

Mohey Mowafy came to the United States from Egypt to attend graduate school, after which he was hired as a faculty member at Northern Michigan University. In 2007, he received the Distinguished Faculty Award from NMU. A Muslim member of the Marquette Interfaith Form, he embraces ideals of love, compassion, and forgiveness.

Khadijah came to the United States to attend college, graduating as a registered nurse at Morris Brown University. Since arriving in Marquette 5 years ago, she has served on the board of the Women’s Center, served in public relations on the board of Rotary West, and served as president of the Superiorland Toastmasters.

After the discussion, dessert will be served. There is no admission charge to attend thanks to sponsorship by the Peter White Public Library and Forward Action Michigan-UP. For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.
