Sci-Fi on Tap: The Left Hand of Darkness

Event Dates and Times

1/17/2018 - Starts: 7:00 PM - Ends: 9:00 PM
Ore Dock Brewing Company, Marquette MI
On Wednesday, January 17 at 7:00 pm, the Peter White Public Library will be hosting a meeting of its book club, Sci-Fi on Tap, at the Ore Dock Brewing Company.

This month, the group will discuss The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin. In a federation of over 80 worlds, the planet of Winter stands alone. Named Winter for its harsh, cold environment, it houses a race of hardy, androgynous human beings who experience “kemmer” each lunar cycle. At this time, sex hormones kick in, sex organs, male or female, develop, and conception becomes possible. To this world comes Genli Ai, a tall dark man who is viewed as a pervert by the residents of Winter. He in turn finds his own conceptions of what it means to be male and female interfere with his ability to trust and understand this new race which he hopes to bring into the galactic federation. The trust and devotion of Estravan, who wants to see his world evolve, forces Genli Ai to reevaluate his own conceptions to better understand the residents of Winter.

The meeting will be in the Tap Room, so look for a PWPL Sci-Fi on Tap sign. Come to the club, enjoy a beer, and express your thoughts on this novel. There is no admission charge to attend. For more information, visit www.pwpl.info or call 226-4318.
