Too many buildings, not enough students?

MARQUETTE -- The structure of the Marquette Area Public School system may be changing.

Tuesday night at the school board's work session, the board discussed with teachers and parents the recommendation of the district's "2009 and beyond grade alignment committee" to realign Marquette Area Public Schools.

Elementary schools would teach kindergarten through fourth grade.  Bothwell Middle School would house fifth through eighth grade and the high school would remain ninth through twelfth grade.

"Well, the school district is contracting in terms of students.  Where we used to be an organization of 5,000 kids, now we have approximately 3,000 students, and so when you have fewer students and fewer revenue dollars to support the program, then you're going to have to have less buildings," said MAPS Superintendent, Jon Hartwig.

Graveraet Intermediate School is the building in question; right now the school houses just Marquette area fifth graders.

If this recommendation goes through, Graveraet would most likely close its doors and the fifth grade would move to the first floor of Bothwell.

No decisions were made and no changes will take place during the 2009-2010 school year.

Cut from the Top

Posted by Reality Check, MQT - Thursday, November 05, 2009 at 12:05 a.m.

Here's an idea..how about cutting from the top?...Lets cut administrative salary by 20%....retire older workers and hire new less expensive workers. Close down Bothwell, and keep Graveraet open. Or is that the plan of the school board to shut down all schools north of Washington street? How about getting rid of the present school board, since they obviously have ruined the MAPS school system.

It's not that big a surprise to see a decrease in enrollment. How many parents have taken their children out of MAPS to attend the charter or private schools due to frustration over some lame decisions that have been made in part by this school administration and the school board?

be careful.....

Not all parents have a bussing option.....for several different reasons. Not all situations are cut and dried.

The Superior Hills parking lot was never designed to have half of the schools children be picked up by their parents instead of taking the bus home. If you don't like it then let your kids take the bus. Your child will become that more independent, and have more social interaction among fellow students.

As for the idea of closing schools, it just makes sense.

Where is the news?

Where is the story in this? I don't see any new information. Just repeating something from last year. I think it is obvious that the schools are heading this way. As a parent of a student at Superior Hills I can say that the parking lot there is NUTS on a daily basis when before it was easy to get in and out of. Adding one grade to a school creates logistics problems for sure.
