What are Facebook, Twitter & YouTube?

MARQUETTE -- Ten years ago the words Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and YouTube would probably mean nothing to you.  But today these content sharing, social networking websites have saturated our everyday life.

Jon Mommaerts of Marquette was at first hesitant to log on to Facebook.com.

"I got into it because I had friends from college that continually emailed me that told me to get on it, get on it, get on it,” said Mommaerts, “and after several months I think there's enough people on it I finally got curious enough or pushed hard enough to actually sign up and get on it."

Jon's not alone.  People 35 and older are the fastest growing demographic on Facebook.

Facebook is a website that 6 years ago didn't exist.  Today it's behind only Google as the most popular website in the world.

Facebook and MySpace are both social networking websites.  They provide the website, and you provide the content with your photo, information and anything else you want to share with others. In exchange, your friends and family share their photos, information and messages with you.

Facebook, with 300 million active users, is almost a requirement for college students.

"It's actually gives status updates on what you're doing in your life and you can use it to message people that you haven't seen in a while, or just keep in touch with people in general," said Michigan Tech Student Ryan Morrell-Peters.

Our own Vicky Crystal uses another social networking website, Twitter.  It’s sort of like a blog about her job on the morning news.

"Twitter is a website where people can go on there and it's the opportunity to share just brief thoughts or brief tidbits of what's happening in your everyday life," said Vicky.

The other popular website that allows you to provide the content is YouTube.  From the ridiculous, to the newsworthy, you'll find it all.

"YouTube is a video sharing site,” said N.M.U. Student Angela Oldgren.  “I use it a lot because I like watching videos people make and really cool music videos and stuff."

But why are these websites so popular?  According to N.M.U. Communications Professor Mark Shevy, unlike television, movies or any other medium, social networking websites make you, your friends and family the stars.

"What is it that we want?  We form relationships with TV actors or even news personalities, but when we have our own friends and family out there as the content, we are even more attached than we normally would be," said Shevy.

And like television and movies, these websites are changing the way we operate as a society, for the better and worse.

Connect with Yoopers across the globe...

Mmmm love social media. Twitter has allowed me to get in touch with Yoopers across the world where I've been able to reminisce about favorites foods, past times, and epic snowstorms.

I highly suggest checking out:

You'll be able to find dozens of Yoopers on Twitter to keep in touch with.

I'm a Facebook person

I was also on myspace and on twitter, but I joined Facebook due to my children begging me to get into it. I'm glad I did, because as I did, I ran into classmates of mine whom I haven't seen since 1981, including my childhood best friend, family members I knew about but have never met, photos of grandparents whom I never have seen, and Friends from Upper Michigan who have moved away. My best childhood friend and I haven't seen each other since December 6, 1981, and now we are chatting like we used to when we lived near each other in Lower Michigan. I also found out her and her spouse come up to this area for vacations, and I never knew it, so I'm thrilled about Facebook, as now we can get together again. I'll keep it. If you don't want to facebook, that's your issue, but I like it.

To R R, Don't know and don't want

Yes I mostly don't know how to work it and don't want to. It pains me most every time I place myself out in public (from agressive drivers to what people say about how they treat their pets (current or former pets, as overheard in a restaurant)...) I AM NOT THE TYPE, I just heard a news blurb once about how someone had their place broken into when they announced to the world that they were on vacation. There are alot of stupid/rude/truly deviant people out there that don't even realize how annoying they are. No one can be exempt, yet I/we must remain tolerant to get by in modern society. Why call attention to yourself? If you really want to be such a social busy bee then go live in Chicago or Detoilet.

It's people like you with your thinking capability that you would be the type or you would'nt have said that. You do not give out personal information-you just share ideas / learn new things every day - very educational if you know how to work it, obviously you don't.

Have a listed #? Use your real name?

Make sure you tell everybody everything and especially tell us about your favorite worldly possessions, so that when you tell us you are on vacation or out of town, we'll make sure your place gets broken into. That's just CRAZY to be so open to the general public for many, many reasons.

Actually it is news...

Actually, you'd be surprised. Social networking is actually the focus of many doctoral programs in the U.S., including educational technology programs. Also, if you check out major national news sites, there is at least 1 story about social networking posted on a daily basis. Thank you TV6 for attempting to bring us up to speed with the rest of the country.

I know this is a two part series and didn't catch it on TV, so I'll be interested to see if you address other ways in which Twitter and other social networking sites can (and should!)be used. As an educator, I follow tweets from innovative researchers and educators around the country. I don't have "friends" on my Twitter account, just people who I share ideas and articles with. It really has helped me expand my personal learning network. Our nation is moving more and more towards a collaborative, ever-changing online network and it is here to stay!
