NEGAUNEE TWP. -- For the first time ever, the Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee Township will remain open all year long.
This summer, the new entrance to the museum off US-41 was completed.
With it came higher accessibility and parking directly in front of the building.
That's why the DNR announced the doors will not close in November like they have in previous years during winter months.
Officials with the museum believe the extended hours will not only benefit the community and schools, but the economy as well.
"We think it's helping to preserve and interpret the story of Michigan's iron mining heritage, but economically we think that gradually that economic impact will increase in the coming years," says Tom Friggens, Museum Director.
Winter hours start Monday.
They're open weekdays from 9:30 to 4:00.
The museum will also be open the first Saturday of each month.
