FLINT (AP) -- Health officials are urging Michigan businesses to be ready to be flexible about employee absences.

The Flint Journal reports that absenteeism could top 30 percent at businesses as workers stay home either because they're sick or to care for a sick family member.

The Michigan Department of Community Health and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend businesses have contingency plans in case swine flu breaks out in their office.

They also advise businesses offer flexible policies that encourage workers to stay home when ill and to be able to take time off to care for a sick family member.

What about when the check-out clerks are blowing bubbles and popping their gum as you check out?? That is worst than dirty hands..

I've worked for Wal-Mart, and their policy will not bend just because a pandemic sends their workers home. You get sick with a bad bug, you'll end up losing your job.

Good thing we've still got the "little" businesses that still have souls.

What would we do if ...

TV6 got hit by the flu and no one showed up for work? Do they ever get "snow days?" Wouldn't we all be surprised if a business was able to do without their staff. It's not likely that most people will be able to stay home due to illness. It just won't work in the real world. Keep washing your hands and holding your breath!

Again, good luck

Where I work you can have 3 absences before they take disciplinary action against you. I highly doubt that they'll take into account H1N1, or the illness of peoples children...nothing has been mentioned yet. Gotta do our best to stay healthy!

Good Luck!

Most companies say they will understand or that they will be flexible, but I know from expeirience that it will be held against you at some point in time. The company I work for keeps track of sick/leave time used and during your yearly evaluation ( which determins your wage increase ) they dont look back at why, just that you used the time! Being a single mother of two young boys I have had to use lots of time. Broken arms, surgery and illness. None of which can be helped but I still get the feeling my supervisor isn't happy. What's a girl supposed to do?
