ONTONAGON -- A grass roots effort is keeping the ambulance service running for five western U.P. communities.

On August 31, SONCO North became the ambulance provider for people living in Carp Lake, Greenland, Ontonagon, Bohemia and Rockland counties.

The transition from Beacon Ambulance to SONCO was pretty much seamless.  However, SONCO North is not taxpayer supported, so the people of the area they serve have been stepping up to the plate.

According to the company spokeswoman, residents have been sending money to SONCO North to help cover the basic cost of operations of  fuel, lease, insurance and supplies.

In addition, several fund-raising events are planned to help raise money to keep the service going.
