MARQUETTE -- Parents Shane and Sarah Reinfelder got to hold their newborn twins for the first time on Friday; a special moment because it's a miracle little Valerie Marie and Kaylin Joy are even here.

"Most women are born with one uterus," explained OB/GYN Dr. Connie Hedmark.  "Sarah was born with two, and that's a very unusual situation in the first place.  So the chances of getting pregnant and then having a pregnancy in each uterus becomes exceedingly rare."

So rare that there's been only three other reported cases in the world.  Sarah found out about the extra uterus after having a miscarriage a couple years ago.

The Reinfelder's also have a 10-month-old son named William.  Sarah says her condition made that pregnancy hard, but a few months after William's birth, she was in for the shock of a lifetime.

"They told me 'Your birth control isn't working; guess what?  You're pregnant!'" said Sarah.  "I was like okay, and then they did the ultrasound and said, 'Guess what?  You're pregnant twice!' and that's when I almost wet my pants."

After they were delivered by caesarian section Thursday afternoon, the babies were brought to the NICU.  Since they were born seven weeks early, Valerie and Kaylin have premature lungs.  Doctors say it's common for premature babies to be underdeveloped, and they're confident Valerie and Kaylin, both around four pounds, will be just fine.

"At 33 weeks those babies will do really well," said OB/GYN Dr. Breanna Pond.  "They did receive steroids which helps lung development and they'll receive everything in the NICU as well to help get them to develop along like they had been in utero."

As for Shane and Sarah, the reality of their medical miracle is starting to set in.

"I'm so excited," Sarah said. "I couldn't sleep at all last night.  I was just thinking about the girls and how I was so happy they were healthy because nobody really knew what to expect."

"It's still setting in here," said Shane.  "It's like okay, they're here.  Now what?"

The babies will spend the next three weeks in the NICU.  After that, the Reinfelders say it's back home to Sault Ste. Marie, where the adventure of raising three small children can begin.

Womber Woman!

Posted by Kim Kehner, Philadelphia, PA - Friday, March 06, 2009 at 10:02 a.m.

Bicornate Uterus is very different from Uterus Didelphys...they are not the same thing. Didelphys is rarer than bicornate. My email address is kimkehner@comcast.net if you have questions...I was very scared when I found out as a teenager that I had uterus didelphys. But it does not make conceiving a child any harder than if you did not have it. And yes, they are fraternal twins, one egg released into each uterus, the anatomy of the uterus has nothing to do with that.

I am a "Womber Woman" as well!

Posted by Kim Kehner, Philadelphia, PA - Thursday, March 05, 2009 at 2:49 p.m.

I have uterus didelphys. In November 2008 I gave birth to twin girls. One baby was in each uterus, just as the new mother in this news story. For all of you who have questions, please email me, I've been through it and will be happy to answer any questions you have!

Also the bicornuate uterus

Posted by Stephanie Jacobs, Rockford, Il - Tuesday, March 03, 2009 at 11:06 p.m.

I'm 23. I had my first son at 17 and a c-section. In May '08 I got pregnant again. In the beginning of June '08 my dr noticed the bicornuate uterus. I'm like wow!!! My dr with my first son did not notice this esp when he was c-section because he was breeched which my dr now said "wow what was he doing" lol. As I'm having a c-section with my 2nd son I notice my dr talkin about the bicornuate uterus in the o.r.

Those babies are in great hands in the MGH NICU. Our baby was born at 4 pounds underdeveloped and they did a great job in the NICU.

Thank NICU staff.

I am 15 and found out about a year ago that i have UD.
This is all very interesting to me, as i am just learning and getting more information and am also a twin myself. I have already had one surgery and am being scheduled for another. This sure does make me feel dandy to know that i will hopefully be able to carry children one day.
well props to the madre!

some confusion

Posted by j e, marquette - Monday, March 02, 2009 at 6:28 p.m.

the people who are insisting that this is "not that rare" are misinformed. you seem to be confusing bicornuate uterus with uterus didelphys. the latter is far more rare, as is carrying a baby in each.

I have 2 uteruses also!

Posted by Nicole Clark, Canadensis - Monday, March 02, 2009 at 1:55 p.m.

Congrats on the babies! I also have two utereses. I have two cervixes as well and a septum to divide it all! My doc told me that it would be slim chances for me to get pregnant in both, though. At 1st when I was pregnant with my son, my doc thought I had a bicorniary (most likely spelled wrong) uterus. Then, when I was a week over due, he induced me. After many hrs I did not dialate - he then broke my water, still nothing. Then he discovered the septum and said I had 2 of everything! After both my c sections, (I got pregnant 6 months after my son), both drs (my reg doc was not on call) called in nurses and other docs to look at my uterus before closing me up! I felt like a freak but also kinda different. Both my kids and I are healthy so good luck to all!

Hello???

As a blessed Mom to three healthy and thriving children, my question may seem odd.... I am just curious, are the parents employed? I hope that they have insurance, not medicaid, but actual insurance. Parenting is an enormous responsibility. That includes the financial means to feed, clothe, and house. While loving, nuturing, and encouraging your children to become productive members within our society let's not loose sight of ALL OF THE responsibilities of bringing children into the world. YES this is a blessing, by any definition.

So lucky! I was born with only one reproductive side, didnt know until my emergency c-section with my daughter @ age 17. Then my son came at 21 and well when it came time to get 'fixed' they tied the one tube in a single knot, how funny does that sound? haha

Everyone is blessed some how!

Didelphys

Posted by Tiffany Hanford, Ohio - Sunday, March 01, 2009 at 12:48 a.m.

I don't know just how common it is to carry to term with uterine didelphys. However, I did carry to term and had a perfectly healthy 9 lb 21" baby. I did have a c-section because he was breech.

Now, I'm totally confused

Posted by Wish To Be Anonymous, Memphis, TN - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 11:34 p.m.

I have two completely separate cervi. My uteri are heart shaped, most likely completely separate but fused together along the center line. I've heard all conditions referred to by doctors, been told I was not supposed to be born, would never have children, am a result of a partially absorbed twin death, etc..... I can't find a doctor in the tri state area that thinks of me as anything other than a science experiment. How are ya'll getting so much information about conditions and yourselves. Where are these doctors? I just want to know what's wrong, if I can safely have kids, if they will get it and suffer as I have, and be treated like a regular woman and not a freak! Any suggestions?

I hope your getting these messages from the website, as you deserve so many kudos. My prayers are with you and your family has you have been doubly blessed.

not so rare

Posted by LB Horner, Chicago - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 10:11 p.m.

I also have two uteri. I found out after my son was born via c-section.. I was told by the doctor that I was "twice the woman" . I didn't have any complications with that pregancy. My son was complete breech and needed to come out via c-section and that's the only reason i found out.
With my second child, i was put in a high risk clinic and monotered weekly to measure the baby vs. fluid level. Since the baby is in 1/2 the normal growing space. pregancy went normal and had a healthy baby girl who actually put my in labor for 7 hours before they could operate. I had a schedualed c-section date for two days later...She just couldn't wait...

I'm happy to see other stories about this. Before I had my son i didn't even know this was a condition. Im just happy to hear other stories of happy healthy babies and mommies! congratulations to this family and all the others with two uteri.

While checking out cnn.com, I noticed the passing of Paul Harvey. I'm not a news buff, but know the name because my sister and I were born via multi-womb twin birth in 1978 with Paul Harvey announcing our birth on national radio. About 10 articles down I noticed article, "Woman with 2 wombs has twins." What are the chances. Good luck new parents. Congratulations!

Two Uterus'-NOT bicornuate uterus

Posted by amanda smith, Michigan - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 9:47 p.m.

The mullerian anomaly that results in two uterus is called Uterus Didelphy. Bicornuate uterus is a different condition, with its own complications.

And, in my kids' playgroup 4 out the 8 moms have some sort of Mullerian Anomaly(MA). Mine is one of the rarer ones-Unicornuate Uterus, which is essentialy half a uterus.

Congratulations to the mom! These stories give hope to women who have been diagnosed with a MA. There's also a Yahoo group dedicated to Mullerian Anomalies where women/families can find information and stories from others who have their condition. Many OBs have never dealt with them and its a helpful place to find answers, or at least a direction.

Correction

Posted by Jessie Reynolds, St. Louis, MO - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 9:35 p.m.

I just wanted to clear something up. Didelphys uterus is different than having a heart shaped uterus. When a woman has a didelphys uterus, the uterus is actually separated completely...which means they have 2, not 1 uterus. There is absolutely no connection between the two like there is in the bicornuate uterus. I would know this because I have a uterus didelphys, and my doctor explained this to me. I also know that it is rare to be able to carry to full-term because the size of each uterus is actually half the size of 1 normal uterus. This is why most women with the didelphys uterus frequently miscarry.

Monica is right -- it's so refreshing to hear a positive story like this after the Nadya Suleman freak show. If this mother has two uteri, Suleman must have 14.

What a blessing to you all. I have two completely separate cervix (cervi?):-) and a double uterus, with one ovary on each side. Had a hysterosalpingogram when I was 18 and thought I would never have children. Now blessed with four healthy kids, 18 - 8 years old. The last was delivered at UVA 2.5 months early after pushing her foot through an apparent tear in the wall between the two uteruses (uteri?) from a previous c-section. I have met more woman than you would think who either have this issue in some form or have a close relative with it. If you have this condition in any form, talk to your doctor. Children may be a little difficult, but not impossible. I wish I had not spent so many years thinking I would never have children.

Some Confusion Here

Posted by Lonna Knapp, California - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 8:22 p.m.

Many of the people leaving comments are confusing a double uterus (uterus didelphys) with a heart-shaped uterus (bicornuate uterus). The twin pregnancy with a baby in each of two completely separate uteri (uterus didelphys) is what is truly rare.

half a uterus

Posted by Shell Marnis, oregon - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 7:26 p.m.

I have the unicollis condition (and just one fallopian tube), which makes conception and gestation tricky. But my pregnancy went to week 38 and then planned C-section (wish I'd waited another day or two). he weighed 8 pounds and was fine until he developed hemangiomas. Until I was 19 I had no idea I have only half a uterus (a banana shaped uterus). 45% chance of live birth. contractions from month 4 on. it was no fun. I wouldn't have conceived if I'd known (wanted to adopt!). These people conceived when their son was just a month old. Terrible! Really terrible. Children need breastmilk until after age 2. And more than one baby is too many!

Comments are supposed to be the opinion of the author, right? These are mine. Those parents are happy; I am not.

I survived somehow having a 5, 11 month old and twins

Posted by a survivor of 11month old and twins twins, new york - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 7:17 p.m.

let me see it was 27 years ago I had twins unknown til I had a little baby girl and the doctor said omg I think there is another one in there...They didn't do ultra sounds unless it was absolutely necessary then....and I had an 11 month old at the time I also had a 5 year old...It was very hard to do with a non present dad...I did it though and I survived....
and they are a joy in my life and now I have twin grand daughters and she had a baby unexpectedly a year older..the things we learn to do...amazing story...Good luck....

I just love stories like this!

What a lovely celebration of life! I have an anomaly in my uterus that causes the placenta to separate from the uterus (placenta previa)at 5-6 months. This occurred in the 5th and 6th month in both of my pregnancies. I went into maternal shock from the heavy bleeding and was scheduled for an emergency C section. Back in those days preemies usually didn't survive. Miraculously, the hemorrhaging stopped before the C section took place. I managed to carry my first baby to full term. The doctor said it was a miracle. With my second baby we pre-empted the problem with hospitalized bed rest before the hemorrhaging started. It makes me glad to see how far we have come in obstetrics and gynecology since then!

It is interesting to read about someone who followed through with pregnancy who also has 2 uteri. I am 52 and was born with this anomaly along with only one kidney & adrenaline too. Each of my uteri have a cervix. I am an AB+ blood type. It would be interesting to know the mother's blood type. I met another woman when in my twenties that had this same anomaly and she also had AB+ blood type. I am quite healthy having taken special care of myself throughout the years. Most see me as at least 10 years younger than my age. Perhaps we are an evolved body type.

Twins? Not so fast...

Posted by Heidi S, Seattle-ish - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 6:19 p.m.

While their mom was pregnant with both babies at the same time, twins occur when an egg or 2 eggs are fertilized at the same time...unless they can prove that this happened (which is pretty unlikely), I'm not so sure the girls are technically "twins". Sisters with the same birthday? Sure. But were they conceived at the same time? Hard to say! They could technically be a week apart.

Not that unusual

Posted by AJ Jenner, California - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 5:25 p.m.

Those of you who said that this situation is not that unusual are correct. As a former hospital admitting manager for several decades, I did see a few similar cases. The reporter should have done more research before reporting that only 3 of these have ever been recorded.

"natural birth"

Posted by Nicole T., NY - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 5:08 p.m.

I am confused and offended by the commenter that mentioned she was happy to hear about a natural birth in the news. Babies conceived via IVF or IUI are natural babies. Some of us need a little help. Just because one nut has 6 embryos transferred and gives birth to 8 babies doesn't mean the rest of us are unnatural or bad. The whole goal is to have one baby per pregnancy. The issue is complicated and you should just count yourself lucky that you are not the 1 in 7 couples that experience infertility.

Is it "Uteruses" or "Uteri"?

Posted by Darryl Schmitz, St. Johns, MI - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 4:54 p.m.

The writer of the article was able to avoid having to use the plural form. According to Merriam-Webster, it can be either.

Yes they are twins

Posted by Akram A, Ontario, Canada - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 3:23 p.m.

There are two types of twins - monozygotic (meaning that they were the result of one fertilized egg dividing into two) or dizygotic (two separate fertilized eggs). In the case of this lucky woman, she had two separate fertilized eggs in each of her two uteri, resuling in fraternal twins rather than identical twins. Best of luck to both of you once you bring the twins home!

not so unusual

Posted by Kris Katz, Arizona - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 3:17 p.m.

I also have a Mullerian anomaly ... they are really not so rare. Mullerian anomalies are any abnormality of the uterus, often associated with abnormalities of the kidneys. There are a bunch of varieties-- single-horn uteri (unicornuate), septate uteri, bicornuate, and full double uterus. Some women have two cervices and two vaginas. It's not actually all that rare, and not even all that rare to have two babies growing (whether or not you want to call them twins). There's quite a bit of info out there... the Yahoo group about Mullerian Anomalies is a very helpful place for people wanting information about these conditions. Congratulations to the happy mama!!

Are they twins?

Posted by Curtis Sorensen, Columbus, GA - Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 2:50 p.m.

Yes they are twins. They are fraternal twins, each the product of a separate sperm/egg fertilisation and born from the same pregnancy. One uterus or two uteri is not part of the determining factor.

Howdy, someone sent this article to me. I am 53 years old and have a bicornuate uterus . This is two chambers with one cervix. I gave birth to twin boys myself and they were 4 weeks early and 7 pounds each. I am only a 110 pound woman myself! They will be l7 years old march 5, 2009 and i gave birth at Central Baptist Hospital. My Dr. was robert Thompson. I had the first one naturally and the second by cesarean. They stayed in hospital only one week. Gabe and Eli were my 4th and 5th children and i had 4 miscarriages out of my 9 pregnancies. It was interesting to see that the article says that there have been only 3 on record. Make that four. lisa

How refreshing to hear of a natural birth that made the news! Especially after the media circus with the woman who had eight (oh my goodness!) babies through in-vitro fertilization.

I had to call my sister, an RN degree candidate, as she is completing her first clinical rotation in the OB ward. She was so excited and is certain it will be discussed in class next week.

Best wishes to the parents and congratulations on your two miracle girls! And thank you TV 6 for a nice human interest story.
